What is meant by directionality of bonds?
Covalent bonds are formed due to sharing of electrons present in valence orbitals of different elements, and orbitals being directional the bonds formed are also directional. Moreover while combining rearrangement of electrons occures by way of mixing of orbitals of the same element as in case of carbon one s orbital and three p orbitals give rise to three sets of arrangements,sp^3 (tetrahedral) sp^2( trigonal planner )and sp linear. the arrangment helps in explaining the geometry of the molecules and behaviour of the compounds towards light, electricity, dipole moment,,,
